Five Minute Read – Changing Places Planning Permission

Changing Places Planning Permission graphic

Does a Changing Places facility need planning permission? What about building regulations? Are there any other regulations we need to consider? And, what about listed buildings? These are among some of the first questions we’re asked when a new client gets in touch.

In this week’s blog, we give a brief overview of planning permission for Changing Places, what is required and how iHUS can assist where necessary.

Does a Changing Places Toilet Require Planning Permission?

Yes, it’s likely that the provision of a Changing Places toilet will require you to obtain planning permission. However, this only applies to modular Changing Places toilets (or pods), and not internal adaptions; adaptions are classed as refurbishments so likely wouldn’t need permission.

If you are planning on installing a facility that is a new structure, you will need to seek permission from your local planning authority.

Are There Any Other Regulations for Changing Places Toilets?

Yes, new structures must comply with Building Regulations; this doesn’t usually apply to internal adaptions, just the Changing Places pods.

Another consideration is the area of conservation and working on listed buildings. Planning permission can be more complex when working on sites that contain listed buildings as any new structures usually need to blend with existing ones and in the case of adaptions, not significantly alter interiors.

Changing Places facilities, both modular and adaptions must also comply with BS 8300 and the suggested layout, to be considered a Changing Places facility. The standard stipulates a certain amount of square footage, plus lists equipment that is necessary. The Changing Places Consortium have a good example of what a BS 8300 layout should look like on page 32 of their Practical Guide.

How Can I Get Help with Changing Places Planning Permission?

Here at iHUS Changing Places we offer a full turn key service which can include planning permission. Our planning permission service is available to all customers who need it and we are happy to apply for relevant permissions on your behalf, using the plans we have drawn up.

Sometimes, clients take care of planning permission themselves; this is usually the case with Local Authorities who have the capability to look after planning in-house. Our service is inclusive though and is offered to each of our clients.

Our Changing Places toilets also comply with BS 8300; both our modular designs and internal adaptions. Each of our facilities is already equipped with the correct equipment and is at least the minimum recommended size, to be considered a Changing Places facility.

We also have experience working in conservation areas and our planning experts can assist with plans when it comes to listed buildings. As our modular solutions are built especially for each customer, they can be adapted to meet planning requirements in conservation areas. Sometimes this is as simple as applying a different type of cladding on the exterior of the building so that it blends seamlessly with existing structures.
