Changing Places Requirements in Tourism

Boost visitor numbers and improve the lives of disabled people with a Changing Places facility at your tourist destination. Installing one of our safe and hygienic facilities will put your destination on the map of places that disabled families know they can enjoy a day out and access a toilet that meets Changing Places requirements.

Tourism Attraction Changing Places Requirements

Although a Changing Places toilet isn’t a legal requirement, your business could be improved significantly with the addition of one. People with complex care needs can end up feeling excluded from some attractions due to the lack of suitable toilets – they may cut visits short or not makes trips at all. Access to a Changing Places facility will make your attraction more attractive to a large group of people.

Types of Tourist Destinations

It is recommended that all large tourist destinations have a Changing Places provision. It would significantly improve the wellbeing of disabled people and their families. Both indoor and outdoor attractions can be upgraded with a Changing Places toilet, including; theme parks, seaside resorts, parks and zoos, and leisure centres.

Theme Parks

Boost visitor numbers at your theme park with a safe and suitable Changing Places bathroom.

Seaside Resorts

Give more people the freedom to visit your beach and attractions for a full day with a seafront Changing Places facility.

Leisure Centres

Incorporate a Changing Places toilet into your existing changing rooms and increase visitor numbers.

Parks and Zoos

These types of attractions are attractive to families with disabled children – enhance their experience with a suitable toilet provision.

Planning your day out

Jane Cooper of Access for All UK who has a disabled daughter explains that if tourist attractions do not have the correct facilities, families of disable people simply will not visit and that days out and holidays away are planned around vital facilities.

A survey by Visit England showed that 430,000 British adults with an impairment did not take a domestic trip in the last 12 months because accessibility concerns. Converted to average spend, they estimate there is a £116.7M opportunity that is being missed in the UK tourism industry.

How Can the Tourism Industry Benefit?

The ‘Purple Pound’ refers to the estimated combined spend of disabled people. Many businesses, especially those in the tourism and leisure industry, are capitalising on this untapped market by improving disability access in order to attract more disabled customers. You can upgrade your attraction to the highest level by installing a Changing Places facility and making your business suitable for those with even the most severe mobility issues.

Our Solution

iHUS specialise in the installation of modular Changing Places facilities and disability adaptions. We have experience working with tourist destinations and attractions from around the UK, installing our modular Changing Places facilities and adapting existing spaces.

Our pre-fabricated modular Changing Places units are manufactured at our site in South Yorkshire. They are then delivered directly to your location and installed by our expert team. This option minimises the amount of disruption at your end; ideal for busy tourist attractions and destinations.

If you don’t have space for a modular facility then we’re able to adapt an existing space into a Changing Places toilet. This could be an unused space or existing toilet. If the space is large enough to meet the British Standard space recommendations, then we can adapt it into a hygienic, safe facility for your disabled visitors.

Case Study

Working with Kingsbury Water Park, we developed a bespoke facility to incorporate a new male and female WC as part of one of our modular units. This replaced an existing portacabin system, providing a safe, hygienic and fully accessible facility for all visitors.

In a word iHUS were Fantastic! They clearly have a grasp on exactly what is needed to meet the Changing Places requirements. There were no delays, everything worked, and our facility is built to a very high standard. Communications were excellent and the project was delivered on time and to budget.
