Regen Centre, Riccall: A More Inclusive Community Hub

The Problem

Great steps are being taken to provide more Changing Places toilets in the UK, with over 1,000 facilities installed so far. The problem is that many facilities don’t fully meet the needs of an increasingly mobile population of people with complex disabilities. Recognising this, the Centre sought to improve its facilities to meet the needs of those people.

“The Regen Centre is a purpose-built community hub” explains Justine, Centre Manager, “but we have noticed in recent years, that our toilets did not meet the needs of guests who have severe disabilities or need assistance. This became even more apparent when a local day care provider visited us, and we realised our toilets didn’t offer the additional equipment or space required.

We work in conjunction with a number of disability charities to provide services and we aim to include as many community members as possible, especially those with disabilities. That’s why we decided that we needed to install a Changing Places facility.”

Situated in the historic village of Riccall between York and Selby, the award winning Regen Centre offers a variety of facilities and services to meet the needs of the local community. Built using grants and lottery funding, the centre is reliant on fundraising and volunteers to operate and for any new projects such as the provision of a new Changing Places facility.

Full Service Provider

The Regen Centre team ran a fundraising campaign for three years to be able to raise the funds for a new toilet facility so it was crucial that the hard-earned money was spent wisely and that a trusted partner could deliver the project. With no previous experience installing a new toilet facility, the centre wanted to choose a provider who could guide them through the process from start to finish.

When we started to look at specialist providers of Changing Places, we quickly found that a lot of companies provided the products we needed but didn’t offer an end to end service.

That’s where iHUS came in; key to us being selected was our comprehensive service which includes design, product knowledge, build and installation.

“After an initial consultation with iHUS, we felt confident that they could deliver the facilities we needed to make our centre welcoming to a bigger group of people,” says Justine. “We had a rough idea of what was needed but with expert guidance from iHUS we were able to transform our old referee’s shower room into a fully equipped Changing Placing facility.”

Preparatory building works included dropping the rooms’ ceiling height from 3,100mm to 2,400mm and then strengthening it to accommodate a track hoist system. To make sure the toilet was easy to access a new door opening was also added. Building works done, we then installed core equipment including a height adjustable basin and changing bench. The fully functional facility was then finished with safety flooring, grab bars and all of the relevant accessories.

Making Waves

Staff and visitors at the Regen Centre are thrilled with the new Changing Places facility, and can now welcome a more diverse range of people, including local charities who provide activities for disabled children, adults and their families.

I’m extremely impressed with iHUS,” concludes Justine. “I found them to be honest, reliable and they delivered exactly what they said they would and in perfect time. We now have a facility to be proud of and I can highly recommend the team. They were all fabulous and worked so well together, with the occasional cuppa and biscuit provided!
