What Type of Space Can You Adapt into a Changing Places Facility?

Disabled changing rooms regulates need to be met for Changing Places

With the installation of Changing Places facilities on the rise, many business owners will be looking at their sites and wondering where a new bathroom can be situated, possibly thinking that it isn’t possible. Although there are specific disabled changing room regulations in place for Changing Places, there is usually always a way that any site can accommodate a new facility.

Even when modular Changing Places units are not an option due to space, there is always the possibility of adapting an existing space; this is a popular option for most of the businesses we work with.

Read on to find out how you can adapt an existing space to meet the needs of your disabled visitors and satisfy disabled changing rooms regulations at the same time.

Spaces That Can Be Adapted into Changing Places Toilets

As mentioned, iHUS manufacture and install modular Changing Places units. However, for some sites, these are not appropriate because of a lack of space or planning restrictions. If that’s the case, an adapted bathroom would be the best route.

An adapted Changing Places suite contains all the same equipment as one of our modular bathrooms and still complies with disabled changing rooms regulations.

Where you site the bathroom depends on what space you have available that would be a suitable size for conversion.

Here are a couple of examples of spaces we have adapted into Changing Places toilets.

Royal Air Force Museum, London

Earlier this year we adapted an underused men’s bathroom into a Changing Places toilet for the Royal Air Force Museum in London. A plan was drawn up to adapt the bathroom and the museum cleared the space, allowing our team to come in and fit a fully accessible toilet. Working in an old aircraft hangar meant that there was a lot of exposed pipework – our team encased this, installing smooth hygienic walls and a non-slip floor.

Regen Centre, Riccall

The Regen Centre team ran a fundraising campaign for three years to be able to raise the funds for a Changing Places facility. We helped them out by adapting an old shower room that was no longer in use. With no suitable outdoor space for a modular option, an adaption was a great solution; the Regen Centre team and their visitors are thrilled with the new bathroom.

Adaptions That Meet Disabled Changing Rooms Regulations

Disabled changing rooms regulations usually refers to British Standard 8300. The standard has over 40 pages related to sanitary provisions and guidance on how you can ensure that your bathroom facilities are easy to use and welcoming for all types of visitor.

The standard also provides information and guidance on installing Changing Places toilets and the criteria that must be met for a bathroom to be considered a Changing Places toilet.

It is worth familiarising yourself with these requirements for your own understanding but when you are a customer of ours, we ensure that any work we carry out is in accordance with the British Standard and also meets the Changing Places Consortium guidelines.

Our adaptions meet and, in most cases, exceed Changing Places requirements, that includes the equipment used in the adapted space and the space itself.

This removes a lot of worry on your part as we ensure that your adaption is compliant, safe and ready to use immediately.
