Will More People with Disabilities Visit My Attraction If We Install A Changing Places Toilet?

Will More People with Disabilities Visit My Attraction If We Install A Changing Places Toilet? Graphic

People with disabilities make up a large proportion of the UK population and like everyone else, they want to live their lives to the fullest and have access to the same conveniences that everybody else does. Sometimes, that’s not always possible due to the lack of appropriate toilets or changing places. for that reason, many disabled people and their families must carefully plan their days and activities, based on what toilets are available for them to use – a quick check of the Changing Places Toilet Map is usually all it takes.

With that said, will you increase visitor numbers to your attraction if you install a Changing Places toilet?

What is The Changing Places Toilet Map?

As mentioned, planning a day out takes a little bit more preparation for someone with a disability and their families. Standard access disabled toilets aren’t adequate for anyone with profound disabilities so days out must be planned around access to appropriate toilet facilities.

Changing Places are special toilets that are designed with more space, adult changing benches and hoists. They provide a safe and clean environment for disabled people to use the bathroom and be changed or cleaned.

The Changing Places Consortium launched a new Changing Places Toilet Map a couple of years ago to assist people with disabilities and their families, locate appropriate toilets and plan their journeys accordingly. The map also features tourist attractions that have Changing Places facilities on site.

These attractions will naturally be more desirable to disabled people, their families and carers, as they will have peace of mind that they will have access to a suitable bathroom.

Attractions that are on the Changing Places Toilet Map will attract more visitors because of the massive, and mainly untapped market of disabled consumers.

A Changing Places toilet can be a lifesaver for a person with disabilities and it will benefit your attraction too.

How Do You Get Your Business on The Changing Places Toilet Map?

First, you need to install a Changing Places facility. This can either be a modular facility (built off-site and lifted into place as a complete unit) or a space you have had adapted.

A Changing Places facility is a very specific toilet that must meet several requirements to be considered a Changing Places. Toilets that don’t meet the requirements cannot be called a Changing Places toilet and won’t be featured on the map.

To read more about how a Changing Places toilet is different to a standard disabled toilet and the special criteria that must be met, read our blog post, What’s inside a Changing Places Facility?

Once you have had your Changing Places facility installed, you can then register your toilet with the Changing Places Consortium – the official campaigners for these special bathrooms. Your attraction will be added to the Changing Places Toilet Map.

Will Adding a Changing Places Faculty Increase Visitor Numbers?

Naturally, increasing the number of disabled facilities at your attraction will attract more visitors. A Changing Places facility is a major step towards making your business more inclusive.

We have discussed the ‘Purple Pound’ in previous blogs and how there are large amounts of people, with money to spend, looking for accessible attractions and businesses.

Increasing accessibility at your attraction, and then advertising the fact that you are an inclusive business can only ever increase visitor numbers. Tap into the market today and you will improve lives as well as your own bottom line.
